As a storyteller, singer-songwriter, and guitar player, Virginia gives this tale an exciting spin. With guitar in hand, she employs loads of audience participation. The Starry Road to Freedom chronicles Frederick Douglass’ journey from slavery to freedom and the transformative power of education. Through various characterizations, songs, dance, and poetry, performer Darius Wallace shares the immensity of Douglass’ message and the inspiration of his legacy.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy Voices of the South’s adaptations of classic Southern literature.   This engaging performance brings the works of Southern writers Katherine Anne Porter (“The Jilting of Granny Weatherall”), Eleanor Glaze (“The Window”) and Kate Chopin (“The Story of an Hour”) to life as performed by founding Voices of the South company members Alice Berry and Jenny Madden.

From The Heart Of A King is the story of Martin Luther King, Jr. on his journey from childhood through the civil rights era. This inspirational theatrical experience invites the audience to witness the power of nonviolence and the passion behind the spoken word.  The story is told through song, dance, poetry, and some of Rev. King’s monumental speeches.

Commissioned by the US Fish and Wildlife to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Wild Legacy illuminates the 1956 Sheenjek Expedition and the experiences of the devoted naturalists that explored this untouched piece of Alaskan wilderness.  Adapted by company member Gloria Baxter with original music by company member Virginia Ralph, Wild Legacy employs Voices of the South's trademark Narrative Theatre style to tell Mardy and Olaus Murie's simple yet powerful story of love for each other and for the majesty of the Alaskan wilderness.

Audiences experience the poetry of Langston Hughes as dramatized by performer Darius Wallace.  Powerful, humorous, exhilarating and enlightening, the lush words breathe life into this inventive one-man stage adaptation.
